Overall the DLC adds the following elements: This way you can find valuable items or precious scrap, which you can transmute into special items with the help from an eccentric inventor, Old Nate. After completing the story you can use airships to find lost expedition's cargo in the northern area of the region, where the visibility is reduced by a massive blizzard. The story leads you through developing your Arctic settlement and constructing your first airship to learning about what happened to the expedition's crew. This is available only in single-player campaign or sandbox, not available in multiplayer. The DLC includes a storyline, during which you are helping Lady Jane Faithful to find her lost husband, who travelled to the Arctic in order to find the eponymous Passage. Additionally, The Arctic can be a source of furs and gold ore, which production is more efficient there than in Old or New World. Using airships it is possible to settle on glaciers, where gas can be extracted to be used in Old World gas-fired power plants, which do not require railway connection. The hangars can be used to construct airships, flying trade ships, which can't be endangered by any existing ships or defences, they can travel above islands and load/unload goods at the same time as other ships.

The second tier, technicians, allows to build monumental airship hangars on islands in The Arctic. Heaters and providing population with specific goods can increase the temperature, which reduces the chances of residents becoming sick. Instead, their well-being depends on their temperature – how warm or how cold is the environment they live in. Arctic population, in opposite to all other types of population, does not have any happiness rating. Both include new buildings, goods, production chains and needs.

Population of The Arctic is divided into two tiers: explorers and technicians. To make the cold climate bearable, it is necessary to use the heating system, placing residences and production buildings in range of heaters, which require a steady supply of coal. The Arctic consists of several islands, some of them represent a mix between a taiga and tundra, while some islands are actually plateaus on top of high glaciers. The main addition of The Passage DLC is a new region, The Arctic, unlocked after completing an expedition available once you have 1 Engineers.
